Five EU countries will demand extension of import restrictions for Ukraine after June, – Polish Minister of Agriculture

Bulgaria, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, and Hungary will ask the European Commission to extend the temporary restriction on imports of certain agricultural products from Ukraine, which they agreed to in exchange for financial aid.

According to PAP, this was announced on Friday by Polish Agriculture Minister Robert Telus.

On Friday, negotiations were held between representatives of the so-called “frontline countries” – Poland, Bulgaria, Romania, Slovakia and Hungary – on Ukrainian agricultural products.

As Telus emphasized at the briefing following the meeting, the appeal to the European Commission will be to provide assistance from the EU’s general budget, as the funds from the Common Agricultural Policy crisis fund have already been completely exhausted.

The Polish minister also said that five EU countries will ask to extend the European Commission’s resolution on temporary safeguard measures on imports of wheat, corn, rapeseed and sunflower from Ukraine.

“We have been promised that it (the resolution – Ed.) will remain in force after June 5,” he said.

In addition, Telus said that Poland will continue to monitor products imported from Ukraine, including flour, poultry, eggs, apple juice, and soft fruits, and informed the Ukrainian representative at the meeting.

As a reminder, on May 2, the European Commission adopted exceptional and temporary safeguard measures on imports of certain agricultural products from Ukraine following pressure from five EU member states that blamed Ukrainian imports for the collapse of local prices.

Thus, the European Commission replaced the unilateral decisions of the five countries with its own regulation and now the import ban applies to four agricultural products: wheat, corn, rapeseed and sunflower seeds from Ukraine.
