European Commission emphasizes that it reserves the right to punish Poland for blocking the border with Ukraine

The European Commission may introduce a punitive procedure against Poland for blocking the border with Ukraine. This was announced by European Commissioner for Transport Adina Veljan.

“There is a list of technical measures that can be taken, but they must be implemented and agreed upon by the Polish side. We continue the dialogue, but we reserve the right to intervene as the European Commission, even initiating infringement proceedings (legal action against an EU country that does not comply with the bloc’s legislation – Ed.) against those who do not follow the rules and do not apply the law,” Veljan said.

According to her, the negotiations are ongoing. The European Commission’s representative Adalbert Janz said that meetings between representatives of the Polish and Ukrainian sides are taking place with the assistance of the EC, where technical details of a possible agreement are being exchanged. One of these meetings is scheduled to take place today, November 30.

Adina Wielan also accused the Polish authorities of showing insufficient initiative to solve the problem on the Ukrainian-Polish border.

“From the very beginning of this protest, we participated and tried to discuss it with all parties involved. There is no goodwill in finding a solution. This is my assessment today, and it is an almost complete lack of involvement of the Polish authorities. I am saying this because the Polish authorities must ensure that the law is respected on this border… I support the right of people to protest throughout the EU, but Ukraine, which is currently at war, cannot be held hostage to the blockade of our external borders,” the European Commissioner said.

The other day, the Polish Ministry of Infrastructure finally commented on the blockade of checkpoints on the border with Ukraine and offered our country to meet the strikers’ demands.

On Wednesday, after a meeting with Polish carriers, Polish Infrastructure Minister Alwin Gayadur said that the Polish government would introduce enhanced checks of Ukrainian carriers on the access roads to the border.
