On January 19, the European Commission approved the scheme of state support for corn producers proposed by the Polish government. This is stated on the website of the European Commission.

“The European Commission has approved about €230 million (PLN 1 billion) of the Polish scheme to support the corn sector in the context of the Russian war against Ukraine… This support will consist of a limited amount of assistance in the form of direct grants. This initiative will be open to corn producers who are at risk of financial liquidity due to difficulties in the agricultural market provoked by the Russian war against Ukraine,” the statement said.

State aid will not exceed €280 thousand for each recipient and must be paid in grants no later than June 30, 2024.

According to the European Commission, this scheme is “necessary, appropriate and proportionate” to correct serious disruptions in the Polish economy.

As a reminder, the European Commission has refused Poland’s request to restore tariff quotas for certain Ukrainian goods.
