Malaysia is on the right track in having the European Union recognize Malaysia’s Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil (MSPO) certification, Deputy Prime Minister Fadilla Yusof said, the Malay Mail reported.

Fadilla, who is also energy and water resources minister, said the EU guidelines are expected to make an announcement by June at the latest.

“We want the MSPO to be recognized so that our smallholder farmers are not left out or marginalized after the implementation of the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR),” the minister said.

She added that once the MSPO is recognized, EU officials will no longer audit Malaysian-made goods.

Last May last year, Fadilla, who was then plantations and commodities minister, led a mission to Brussels to convey the position of members of the Council of Palm Oil Producing Countries (CPOPC) on the implementation of the EUDR.

He said as a member of CPOPC, Malaysia intends to actively participate in the platform and continue with the program to counter the negative campaigns of Western countries against palm oil.
