EU wheat crop could be down next year due to rainfall
Soft wheat production in the European Union is set to fall next year due to rainfall in France. However, barley production will increase as it replaces winter cereals, which are performing poorly.
Strategie Grains analysts report that initial forecasts for the 2024 crop for soft wheat are 124.8 million tons, down 1% from last year’s result. They also lowered their estimate of planted area under soft wheat to 21.2 million hectares, down 2.4% from the 2023/24 MY.
At the same time, barley production is expected to increase by 11% to 52.7 million tons, despite a 0.8% year-on-year decrease in sown area under winter cereals.
