EU starts reviewing Ukraine’s legislation to start accession talks – von der Leyen

The President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen announced the start of the screening of Ukrainian legislation. She also announced the formation of a negotiation framework for Ukraine’s membership in the European Union. She made the announcement during a speech in the European Parliament.

“We are starting the screening process and forming a framework for negotiations. In the meantime, we will also start working on our reforms, our own reforms,” von der Leyen said.

According to her, it is a question of expansion to 35 EU member states.

“The hearts of millions of Ukrainians were filled with joy and hope when we announced the opening of accession negotiations. The people of Ukraine fought hard to achieve this not only on the battlefield. But also through the work of democratic institutions,” von der Leyen emphasized.

The EC President reminded that the EU agreed to start negotiations with Moldova, and Georgia was granted candidate status.

Von der Leyen also added that the Western Balkan countries are part of the European community.
