EU grain harvest: MY 2023/24 results and forecasts for MY 2024/25 from Copa-Cogeca
According to the latest Copa-Cogeca report, the total area devoted to cereal production in the EU will decrease by 3.5% in 2024 compared to 2023, reaching 48,568.6 thousand hectares. This reduction in sown area will affect most major crops, with some notable exceptions. Overall, total EU cereal production is projected to decrease by 4.7%, from 269,899 thousand tons in 2023 to 257,319.6 thousand tons in 2024. This decline is mainly due to decreases in planted area and yields of several major crops, with the exception of notable increases in rye and oats.
Milling wheat
Milling wheat acreage is expected to decrease by 5.0%, from 21,769,000 ha in 2023 to 20,685.9,000 ha in 2024. Production will also decrease significantly by 6.4%, to 117,515.9 thousand tons, mainly due to a 1.5% decrease in yields.
Durum wheat
The area under durum wheat is expected to decline by 7.5% to 1,981.1 thousand hectares in 2024. Despite a slight yield increase of 1.9%, total production will decrease by 5.7% to 6,586.3 thousand tons.
Barley
Barley area will remain relatively stable with a slight decrease of 0.4% to 10,293.9 thousand hectares. However, yields will drop significantly by 8.9%, causing total production to fall by 9.3% to 43,046.7 thousand tons.
Corn
Corn is one of the few crops under which sown area is expected to increase by 1.3% to 8,487.6 thousand hectares. However, yields will decrease by 1.8%, bringing total production to 62,381.3 thousand tons, a slight decrease of 0.5%.
Rye and oats
Production will increase. The area planted to rye will decrease by 7.2%, but a marked 10% increase in yields will result in a 2.1% increase in production, to 7,554.5 thousand tons. In contrast, oats acreage will increase by 3.2 percent and yields will increase by 17.5 percent, leading to a 21.2 percent increase in production to 7,098.1 thousand tons.
Sorghum area will increase by 0.5%, but its yield will decrease by 8.6%, which will lead to a decrease in production by 8.2%.
