The agreement approved by the EU institutions to continue trade liberalization with Ukraine does not take into account the key concerns of European farmers.

This is stated in a statement by six agrarian associations of the European Union, published on March 20 on the COPA-COGECA website.

It is noted that the comments made by the European Parliament were not fully taken into account and led to a “weak compromise”.

“Small but important amendments that would have provided an effective solution for European producers were not taken into account,” the document says.

The farmers welcomed the inclusion of oats, cereals and honey in the list of possible products to be restricted, but emphasized that without including 2021 in the calculation of the limits, the burden on EU farmers will not change.

European farmers also insist on including wheat in the list of restrictions.

“Our organizations cannot support the agreement reached in the trilateral format and call on the EU member states and the European Council to seriously consider the signal they are sending to European farmers and producers, including a new compromise to be discussed at the trilateral level,” the farmers concluded.

The appeal was signed by: AVEC – Association of Poultry Processors and Poultry Trade in the EU; CEFS – European Association of Sugar Producers; CEPM – European Confederation of Corn Growers; CIBE – International Confederation of European Beet Growers; COPA-COGECA; EUWEP – European Union for the Wholesale of Eggs, Egg Products, Poultry and Game.
