Egypt will become the world’s largest importer of wheat in 2024/25 MY, as the country is recovering from the crisis of foreign exchange reserves and seeks to restore stocks, according to the US Department of Agriculture. The imports of wheat in the next season are expected to reach 12 mln tonnes, compared to 11 mln tonnes expected in 2023/24 MY.

“In addition to milling wheat for domestic use, Egypt is expected to continue exporting some wheat flour to neighboring countries such as Sudan. Drought conditions will require increased imports in other North African countries, especially Morocco,” the latest USDA report says.

Algeria is expected to become the second largest importer of wheat in Africa with 8.5 million tons, followed by Morocco with 7.5 million tons, while Nigeria will be the fourth largest importer with 4.8 million tons.

The total imports by North Africa in 2024/25 MY are expected to reach 31.5 mln tonnes, up from 30.1 mln tonnes in the current season.

As a reminder, in this MY China became the world’s largest importer of wheat, taking the lead from Egypt, but this year it increased the production due to the government support.
