According to the statements of the Minister of Supply and Internal Trade of Egypt Ali Al-Moselhi, the government intends to reduce wheat imports in 2024 by 17% to 5 million tons, instead of the previously planned 6 million tons. This decision is connected with the increase in the volume of domestic purchases of grain products this season from 3.5 million to 3.7 million tons. So far, 3.4 million tons of domestically produced wheat have been purchased.

It is worth noting that in 2023, the country increased its wheat imports to 11 million tons compared to 9.6 million tons in 2022. Approximately half of this volume, about 5 million tons of grain, was allocated for state needs, and the rest was intended for the private sector.
