Early 2021/22 soybean planting underway in Brazil
Last week was the first week in Brazil that farmers could start planting their 2021/22 soybeans. The first day to plant in Parana, Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina was September 13th. The first day to plant in Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, and Sao Paulo was September 16th. AgRural reported that the 2021/22 soybeans were 0.1% planted as of late last week.
The rainfall in southern Brazil has been good enough for farmers to start planting especially in Rio Grande do Sul. Farmers like to receive 2-3 inches of rainfall before they will risk planting soybeans. The rainfall in Mato Grosso has been sporadic and more isolated with the best rains in western Mato Grosso. Temperatures early this week in central Brazil are going to be very hot, in the range of 40°C to 42°C (104°F to 107°F)
Mato Grosso – Farmers in western Mato Grosso started planting their soybeans last Thursday, September 16th, which was the first day they were allowed to start. The rains in the far western part of the state have been better and the Mato Grosso Institute of Agricultural Economics (Imea) reported that 0.28% of the soybeans in the state were planted as of last Friday compared to 0.26% last year and 0.23% average.
There should be a lot of soybeans planted in western Mato Grosso by the first week of October and these first planted soybeans should be ready to harvest by the last two weeks of December. The early soybeans in western Mato Grosso will probably be followed by a second crop of cotton. The ideal planting window for safrinha cotton in western Mato Grosso usually closes by the end of January.
The rains in western Mato Grosso are the result of moisture moving down from the Amazon Region and the rains usually start in the western part of the state and move their way east. Within a few weeks, the rains will start in eastern Mato Grosso and then eventually the rains will start in the states of Goias and Tocantins with the last rains in the states of Bahia, Maranhao, and Piaui.

Parana – The rainfall in southern Parana has been good enough for some farmers to start planting their 2021/22 soybeans. The Department of Rural Economics (Deral) reported that 1% of the soybeans in the state had been planted by the end of last week. After the delayed start last year, farmers are anxious to start planting as soon as possible. Any soybeans planted this week in Parana should be ready to harvest by the end of December allowing ample time to plant safrinha corn.
