EAEU countries to toughen requirements for the content of harmful substances in edible oils

The member states of the Eurasian Economic Union are completing discussions on edible fats regulations involving restrictions on the content of harmful substances in animal and vegetable oils (trans fats, glycidyl esters of fatty acids, in particular in palm oil, as well as a number of other unsafe substances).

As a follow-up, amendments will be made to the uniform sanitary requirements, which, according to preliminary estimates, can be introduced from 2025.

Currently, the EAEU has a requirement limiting the content of trans fats in fat-and-oil products to no more than 2%.

On May 31, 2021, upon the results of a regulatory impact analysis procedure, the Economic Development of Russia endorsed draft No.2 of amendments to the “Technical Regulation for Fat-and-Oil Products” (TR 024/2011).

The amendments to the Technical Regulation set up requirements regarding permissible content of glycidyl ethers of fatty acids in glycidol terms for vegetable oils and fats depending on their purpose. According to the document, the content of glycidyl ethers must be at most 1.0 mg/kg.

The provision will be introduced step-by-step: it will be extended to tropical oils from 2023 and to vegetable oils from domestic oilseeds and vegoil-based fats from 2025, UkrAgroConsult reports.
