Drought left Moldovan farmers without sunflower and corn crops

The drought that hit Moldova led to a reduction in the harvest of corn and sunflower by half compared to last year’s figures. At the same time, in the south of the country, where there was no rain for three months, there will be no harvest at all. With such a statement in conversation published IPN Executive Director of the National Federation of Farmers of Moldova Vasile Marzenko.

He stressed that the harvest itself is now in question. Small volumes of corn and sunflower, which will be harvested by agricultural producers, will not recoup labor costs.

“There is no point in going to the field with a combine, because harvesting services are more expensive than the grain they will sell,” Marzenko explained.

The head of the federation stressed that one hectare for sunflower or corn would cost the farmer eight to ten thousand lei (about 30 thousand rubles). At the same time, prices for grain for the new sowing crop, fertilizers and diesel fuel have skyrocketed several times. Farmers will not be able to recoup the money already spent. But worse is that there will not be enough money for a new agricultural cycle. Land preparation for sowing winter wheat and barley will begin in August.

According to Marzenko, it is useless to wait for help from the government of the republic now. According to him, farmers not only in Moldova, but throughout Europe have faced this problem.
