Corn Estimate in Mato Grosso do Sul Lowered 2.2 mt to 9.28 Million
The Agricultural and Livestock Federation of Mato Grosso do Sul (Famasul) indicated in their weekly report that farmers in the state had harvested 65.9% of their 2023/24 safrinha corn compared to 16% last year and 26% average. This represents an increase of 16.3% for the week.
The corn still in the field is rated 34.5% poor (34.6% the prior week), 26% average (25.9% the prior week), and 39.5% good (39.5% the prior week).
Famasul is currently estimating the 2023/24 corn production at 9,28 million tons, which is down 2.2 million tons from their last estimate of 11.48 million. The corn estimate is now down 34.7% compared to last year. The 2023/24 statewide corn yield is estimated at 69.77 sacks per hectare (66.5 bu/ac), which is down 30.7% compared to last year.
Lower yields are the result of extended periods of dry weather, especially in the southern part of the state. The corn harvest is expected to be complete by approximately September 13th, so the production estimates could still change.
