Corn and sunflower oil will be the leaders in agricultural exports from Ukraine in 2022

Last year, during the war, Ukrainian business exported 99.8 million tons of goods worth $44.1 billion, Deputy Minister of Economy — Trade Representative of Ukraine Taras Kachka said on his Facebook page.

“Under normal conditions, trade indicators could appear catastrophic, because the value of exports is 35% lower than in 2021. And physical volumes have decreased by 38.4%,” he clarified.

Among goods, the leader in terms of money (and volume) is corn. Exports amounted to 24.99 million tons worth $5.94 billion. Although by 1%, this is more than in 2021, which is a sensation against the background of all indicators, according to the deputy minister.

“Sunflower oil is the second place in terms of export value: $5.46 billion. Reduction compared to 2021 in money -14.4%, and in volume -16.3% (4.29 million tons). At the same time, it should be taken into account that sunflower seeds made it into the top 10. We exported 2.7 million tons worth $1.255 billion. This is 33 times more than last year. This is the volume that the oil extraction plants could not process. I hope that in 2023 we will have a reverse flow, when the export of seeds will decrease, and the export of oil will increase proportionally,” adds Taras Kachka.

Ukraine exported 11.2 million tons of wheat during the calendar year. The cost is $2.6 billion. The reduction compared to the previous calendar year was 44.1% in volume and 44.7% in money.

The export of 3.12 million tons of tripa brought $1.54 billion. In terms of volume, this is 17% more, but in terms of money – 8.6%, the trade representative added.

“Soy is a rare case of significant growth despite the war. The physical volume of exports increased by 81.6% and amounted to 1.99 million tons. The value: $862 million, 42% more than last year,” he notes.

Poultry meat was exported by 10% less — 413,000 tons, but this brought 19% more revenue — $852 million.

Geographically, 63% of Ukraine’s total exports went to the EU ($27.9 billion). Among the EU member states, the largest exports were directed to Poland ($6.6 billion), Romania ($3.8 billion), Hungary ($2.27 billion), Germany ($2.23 billion), Italy ($1.5 billion) and Spain ($1.5 billion).

Outside the EU, Turkey ($2.9 billion) became the largest export market, ahead of China ($2.46 billion). But at the same time, exports to Turkey decreased by 29% within the year, and to China by a whopping 69%.

“Import volume decreased by almost half (-48.1%), but in value only by 19.6%. In 2022, we imported 35 million tons of products worth $58 billion. This figure can be significantly adjusted,” concluded Taras Kachka.
