In its fourth forecast for the 2023 harvest, COCERAL estimates the total EU-27 + UK cereal harvest at 289.8 million tons. This is down from 296.7 million tons in the June forecast and in line with the 290, 1 million tons harvested in 2022. The main reason for the worsened forecast is that early drought in the northern part of the EU has had a bigger impact than previously expected. Crop estimates are significantly lowered for Germany, Bulgaria, Denmark, Sweden, Finland and Latvia. Wheat production (excluding durum) is expected at 141.0 million tons, down from 142.4 million tons in the last forecast and down from 143.6 million tons in 2022.

Barley production in the EU-27+UK in 2023 is forecast at 54.7 million tons, down from 56.6 million tons in the last forecast and 58.6 million tons in 2022. The corn harvest is estimated at 60.8 million tons, down from the previous forecast of 61.3 million tons and only 52.7 million tons last year. In France, Germany, Italy, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria, a larger crop is expected as the 2022 crop suffered from severe drought and heat.

The EU-27+UK rapeseed crop is forecast at 20.4 million tons, up from 21.0 million tons in the previous forecast and 19.9 million tons in 2022.
