China strengthens measures to ensure food security
China is stepping up measures to ensure food security by focusing on increasing grain yields.
Such plans were announced at the annual meeting on agricultural policy, pointing to the need to stabilize crop rotation and increase crop yields. Although no specific measures have been identified, Chinese scientists are working to improve genetically modified corn varieties.
In addition, China will focus on “consolidating the results of soybean expansion”. Over the past two years, China has significantly increased domestic soybean production to reduce its dependence on oilseed imports. However, this policy has led to an overproduction of non-GM soybeans for use in the food industry, forcing China to purchase oilseeds for state reserves.
The state also intends to strengthen the protection of arable land, revive the seed industry and develop farmland in the northeast of the country.
