China reports African swine fever outbreak on Hainan Island
China reported an outbreak of African swine fever (ASF) at a pig farm on Hainan island in the southern part of the country.
The outbreak involved 1,063 domestic pigs. It began on 23 October, and was reported on Tuesday.
At this time the source of the infection is unknown, said the Paris-based World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) said on Tuesday.
According to the OIE report, applied measures include: quarantine, stamping out, surveillance outside containment and or the protection zone, zoning, traceability and screening.
African swine fever is deadly to pigs. After reaching China in August 2018, the virus wiped out 50% of the country’s pigs in just one year.
African swine fever is harmless to humans.
