Chicken lost competitiveness in Brazil in August
The consumption pattern defined for 2022 remains unchanged, with an overwhelming share of the population prioritizing products that have less impact on their average income. The loss of consumption power in the midst of uncontrolled inflation is noticeable, which directs an important part of the population to the consumption of more affordable proteins, which is precisely the case of chicken and eggs.
In August the prices of the three main proteins consumed in the country fell in the São Paulo market, but chicken fell less. Because of this, this protein ended up losing competitiveness in comparison with beef and, especially, pork. In any case, it still proves to be a more viable alternative for most households.
The kilogram of frozen chicken in São Paulo dropped to BRL 8.50 in the second half of August, after a period of sales that can be characterized as positive at the turn of the month. Pork, in turn also operates with falling prices, the special pork carcass in São Paulo dropped to BRL 10.20, also in the second fortnight.
In the beef market, the decline was even more aggressive, with very comfortable scales and full stocks. Even in the first fortnight of the month, there were already signs of a decline in prices at the São Paulo wholesale market. The movement was more intense for beef hindquarters, which fell to the level of BRL 20.70 per kilogram. Even in retail, prices dropped, but the low was so discreet that it did not have a major impact on the consumption decision of most households, keeping premium beef cuts away from the table of Brazilians.
