Bulgaria to harvest a smaller oilseed crop than expected

A record-large planted area will allow Bulgarian farmers to gather close to the record sunflower seed crop in 2020. Meanwhile, the yield forecast decreased by 4% from the July forecast due to an adverse impact of drought in southeastern Bulgaria.

Domestic crush (sunflower oil and dehulling of sunflower seed) will drop, but remains in priority. Sunflower seed imports are expected to decrease. Russia will very likely restrict sunflower seed exports in the new season in view of a crop decline (Russia accounted for over 35% of total imports in MY 2018/19).

Rapeseed crop will be smallest since MY 2010/11 because of the planted area shrank for a second season in a row.

A tight rapeseed balance in Bulgaria in view of EU demand underpins domestic prices, which are at the highest level since January 2018, UkrAgroConsult reports.
