Bulgarian agricultural exports by sea in 2023/24 season amounted to almost 8 M mt (6.2 M mt in 2022/23, + 28%). The exports in the first half of the season (July-Dec, 2023) were the largest. This was fundamentally different compared to the previous season, when exports were mainly in the second half of the season (Jan-June).
PORTS AND TERMINALS
About 64% of agricultural commodities are exported through the port of Varna and another 34% through the port of Burgas. The remaining 2% goes to other river ports on the Danube (Vidin, Selistra, Ruse).
In the 2023/24 season, Bulgaria has significantly improved its export logistics capacity through increased infrastructure investments. A new grain terminal with capacity of 2 M mt of grain per year started operations in the state-owned port of Varna.
The new terminal is part of a Euro25 M investment project between the Port of Varna and the Varna West Grain Terminal. Varna West Grain Terminal is a subsidiary of Agropolychim, a local private fertilizer producer and grain trader.
The terminal’s expanded capabilities allow to handle several vessels simultaneously, providing a total export capacity of over 35 K mt per day. The new grain storage capacity is of 100 K mt of grain.
