Brazilian pork meat exports drop
Brazil exported 9.3% less pork meat in the first half of 2022 in comparison to the same period in 2021 with China reducing its external demand sharply.
In total, the South American country shipped 510,200 tonnes in the first 6 months this year against 562,700 tonnes in the first half of 2021, according ABPA (Brazilian Association for Animal Protein). Meanwhile, income decreased by 17.4%, from US$1.349 billion to US$1.115 billion.
“After the performance in 2021, we see pork exports maintaining stable levels in recent months, with volumes higher than the period prior to the African Swine Fever health crises in important producing nations,” analyses Ricardo Santin, president of ABPA.
As a comparison, Brazil exported 230,000 tonnes more pork meat in the first half of this year than the performance recorded in 2018, a period before the effects of the disease.
Brazilian pork exports reached 93,500 tonnes in June – 14% less than the shipments registered in the same period of 2021 (108,800 tonnes).
International sales generated revenue of US$219.1 million in June, a number 18.9% lower than that registered in the 6th month of 2021 (US$270.2 million).
Among the main destinations for pork exports in June are China at 37,200 tonnes (-36.7%), the Philippines at 9,400 tonnes (+229.2%), Hong Kong at 7,900 tonnes (-5.9%) and Vietnam at 4,300 tonnes (+14.9%).
“Asian nations continue to be protagonists among the destinations of Brazilian pork exports. There is an upward trend in sales in the medium term, given the continuous increase in consumption of animal protein in this region,” highlights Luís Rua, ABPA’s market director.
He points to the Philippines, which this month gained ground in the data on shipments, taking the second position in this region. “Brazil has positioned itself as a stable and reliable partner to meet this additional demand from Asia,” he concludes.
