Brazil Safrinha Corn 90% Harvested, Planting Next Crop Starting

Brazilian farmers are finishing up the harvesting of their 2021/22 safrinha corn and starting to plant their 2022/23 first corn crop. As of late last week, farmers in Brazil had harvested 90% of the safrinha corn. In central Brazil, the safrinha corn harvest is complete in the states of Mato Grosso and Goias. In southern Brazil, the safrinha corn harvest in Parana was 84% complete as of earlier this week according to the Department of Rural Economics (Deral).

The safrinha corn harvest is slowest in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul where 50% of the safrinha corn has been harvested as of late last week according to the Agriculture and Livestock Federation of Mato Grosso do Sul (Famasul). Recent cold and wet conditions in the state have slowed the drydown of the corn and the harvesting. Heavy storms moved across the state last week in association with a strong cold front. Rainfall amounts of over five inches were recorded in various areas and high winds caused significant lodging in some of the mature corn.

For Brazil’s 2022/23 first corn crop, approximately 2% of the corn has been planted with the most advanced planting in the state of Rio Grande do Sul where approximately 7-8% of the corn has been planted. The most advanced planting is in the northwest corner of the state where as much as 30% of the corn in individual municipalities have been planted.

Farmers in these locations are anxious to plant their corn as soon as possible so that it can be double cropped with a second crop of soybeans in early January.

In the state of Parana, approximately 1% of the 2022/23 corn had been planted as of earlier this week. The corn is 100% germinating and is rated in good condition. The first corn crop acreage in Parana has been declining in recent years as farmers opt for more safrinha corn instead.
