Black Sea Grain & Oil Trade-2020: SGS will present innovative grain storage technology

Now, more than ever, it is important to be aware of current events and news of agribusiness. UkrAgroConsult strives to provide its clients with the best possible knowledge and understanding of the markets. That is why we invited Gennady Shulga, one of the speakers at the Black Sea Grain & Oil Trade-2020, to talk about the innovative grain storage technology, which has already demonstrated excellent results in the field. So, we asked Gennady Shulga, Vice President for Business Development in the agricultural and food sector, SGS Group a few questions:

– Gennady, tell us what disadvantages are observed in the existing traditional grain storage system? Why did you need to develop a new solution?

– The fact is that storage of grain and oilseeds in warehouses using traditional technology leads to problems such as theft, stains, germination, grain contamination, mold, attacks by rodents, insects, etc. Temperature and humidity are critical factors in maintaining grain quality. These factors directly affect the rate of development of insects and microorganisms in the grain – mold, fungi, bacteria – and the premature and non-seasonal germination of grains. Temperature depends not only on climatic conditions, but also on biochemical changes that take place inside the grain, which leads to unwanted heating during storage.

Even a small batch of grain with high moisture content or a leaking warehouse roof can damage the product. If the damaged lot is not processed or isolated as soon as possible, the entire batch of grain may be spoiled. The longer it takes to take these measures, the greater the losses will be.

– What solution do you propose?

– SGS has developed a new Smart Warehouse solution. The system is able to detect fluctuations in temperature and moisture content of the cargo inside the grain mound at various levels. Storage conditions are controlled by monitoring relative humidity, temperature, and carbon dioxide levels. This solution provides a real-time online monitoring. The sensors quickly and accurately detect the affected area and provide alarms and the necessary information for operational actions. Data is transmitted via mobile networks to an online platform, allowing remote monitoring of the status of goods from anywhere in the world.

Smart Warehouse allows you to identify all affected areas and respond quickly, thereby ensuring the quality, integrity and safety of goods for a long time.

– What is the advantage of this technology?

– Smart Warehouse is a unique competitive solution for maintaining the quality of stored grain. Helps prevent germination, mold, mite, insect and germ infestation.

The system automates and simplifies monitoring by sending hourly measurements of temperature, humidity and carbon dioxide. Real-time results allow us to respond to a potential problem without delay.

As a result, there has been a reduction in incident costs, grain circulation and ventilation costs.

– How do you manage to ensure control of all levels of the grain fill?

– When installing the sensors, pneumatic vacuum sensing equipment is used. At the same time, it is possible to obtain representative samples from each layer along the entire depth (according to ISO 24333: 2009) for subsequent assessment of the quality of the cargo. At the same time, there is no movement and damage to the cargo during sampling. This technology allows you to detect hidden problems, and instantly respond if monitoring parameters go beyond a certain safety range.

SGS IoT solution for online/continuous monitoring of temperature, humidity and CO2 of stored grain has been developed and already successfully tested in several countries.

– What opportunities does the IoT system provide?

– The solution is flexible and modular, which potentially allows us to add various “IoT” sensors. At the request of banks and insurance companies, we have already started pilot projects to monitor the unauthorized movement of cargo in the warehouse and continuously monitor the volume of cargo. This became especially important in Ukraine after the losses associated with the default of Agroinvest. Western banks are ready to return to financing Ukrainian companies subject to the introduction of additional modern control methods to minimize risks.

The tools that SGS have developed and deployed can detect multiple problems, including corrupt manipulation, at early stage, thereby preventing waste. The introduction of Smart Warehouse technologies is welcomed by banks with insurance companies, and if applied, they are ready to provide lower rates for financing and insurance, as they see a real minimization of their risks.
