Argentina exported $32.8 billion worth of grains and their derivatives in 2021, a record result since the beginning of this century, said the country’s chamber of exporters and grain processors, CIARA-CEC, in a report released over the weekend. Agricultural sector export dollars are an important source of revenue for Argentina as the country emerges from a recession that has been exacerbated by the coronavirus pandemic, while average Argentines struggle with inflation of around 50% a year.

In December alone, the sector exported 2.68 billion dollars in grains and derivatives. Argentina is the world’s largest supplier of soy meal for cattle, used to fatten pigs and poultry from Europe to Southeast Asia. The country is also a major exporter of corn, wheat and raw soybeans.

Argentina benefited in 2021 from high grain prices, the chamber said in its report. Challenges included dry weather that damaged crops and low water levels on the Paraná River, the country’s main transport route for grain cargo ships.
