In 2023/2024, Algeria’s wheat imports are expected to be 8.7 million tons, almost 1.2 million tons more than a year earlier. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), this jump in purchases is due to production, which is expected to fall to 2.7 million tons, nearly 600,000 tons less than the previous season.

Due to the dry and hot conditions prevailing in rainfed areas, yields per hectare are expected to be 1.3 tons compared to 1.5 tons a year ago.

The country consumes an average of 11 million tons of wheat per year, making it the second consumer of the commodity in North Africa after Egypt.

In 2022-23, the North African country is estimated to produce 3.3 million tons of wheat and 1.4 million tons of barley.
