Exports of olive oil from Albania from January to April this year quadrupled compared to the same period of 2022 – from 326 tons (January-April 2022) to more than 1.25 thousand tons. This was stated by the country’s Deputy Agriculture Minister Arian Jauplari.

According to him, it was possible to achieve this increase due to the record olive yields in Albania in the 2022/23 season and the drought throughout the Mediterranean basin, which created conditions for increasing the competitiveness of Albanian olive oil on the market.

“The Ministry, together with experts and the private sector, continues to cooperate to make the production and export of oil another success story of the national agricultural sector,” he said.

It should be noted that the region is now experiencing an overproduction of the finished product, as domestic consumption has been quite stable in recent years and is estimated by some experts to be around 13,000 tons, although production is around double that.

Drini Imami, an associate professor at the Agricultural University of Tirana, believes that the oil output figures are growing on the back of the increase in the area under olive cultivation and favorable conditions for its development. This, he said, allows for high yields and an increase in the export potential of olive oil.
