2023/24 Soybeans in Parana are 6% Planted According to Deral

Farmers in the southern Brazilian state of Parana are making rapid progress in planting their 2023/24 soybeans and first corn crop. Soybean planting reached 6% as of earlier this week according to the Department of Rural Economics (Deral). This represents an advance of 5% for the week. The soybean planting progress trails only 2018 when 9% of the soybeans had been planted by this date.

Temperatures this week are expected to be hotter than normal, but rainfall over the last several weeks has recharged the soil moisture to the point where farmers will continue planting despite the high temperatures.

Deral estimates that farmers will plant 5.8 million hectares of soybeans in 2023/24 (14.3 million acres), which is up only slightly compared to last year.

The 2023/24 first corn crop in the state was 58% planted as of earlier this week. Farmers are expected to plant 317,000 hectares of first crop corn (783,000 acres), which is down from last year. Farmers are switching some of their corn from the first crop to the safrinha crop which will be planted after the soybeans are harvested in January and February.

The 2022/23 safrinha corn harvest is slower than normal with 96% harvested as of earlier this week. Wet weather during August and September slowed the harvest pace and resulted in high grain moisture. Farmers in the state are harvesting corn, harvesting wheat (47% complete), planting corn, and planting soybeans at the same time.
