2021/22 Soybean Harvest in Mato Grosso is 13.3% Complete

The soybean harvest in Brazil is underway and farmers in Mato Grosso had harvested 13.3% of their 2021/22 soybeans as of late last week compared to 2.2% last year and 13.2% average according to the Mato Grosso Institute of Agricultural Economics (Imea). This represents an advance of 9% for the week. The harvest is most advanced in the mid-north region where the soybeans are 19% harvested and it is the slowest in the center-south region where the soybeans are 5% harvested.

Soybean yields in Mato Grosso are generally good but variable depending on location. Some locations have higher yields than last year and some locations have lower yields than last year. Statewide, yields are in the range of 50-60 bu/ac, which is good, but probably not as high as some farmers had hoped. In the lower yielding locations, farmers are blaming the persistent cloudy and overcast conditions during November and December for the lower yields.

In the municipality of Xavantina in northern Mato Grosso, farmers are imitating their 2021/22 soybean harvest with high expectations. According to the president of the Rural Union of Xavantina/MT, soybean yields in the municipality should be in the range of 55 sacks per hectare (49 bu/ac), which would surpass last year’s yield of 50 sacks (44.7 bu/ac) and the average of 53 sacks (47.3 bu/ac). The weather during the growing season was beneficial for the development of the soybeans.

Farmers in Mato Grosso have been slow to forward contract their 2021/22 soybean production because they remember last year when they sold too much of their anticipated production early in the growing season only to see prices soar after the crop was harvested.
