2021/22 Argentina Corn 5% Harvested, Rains Help Stabilize Crop

Rainfall last week improved the soil moisture for the corn especially the corn planted during the second phase. Additional rain fell over the weekend and there is more in the forecast. The soil moisture for the corn is rated 27% short, 72% favorable/optimum, and 1% excessive.

The early planted corn is 51% mature and 10% harvested, while the later planted corn is 80% pollinating and 9% filling grain. Overall, the corn in Argentina was 5% harvested as of late last week. The Argentina corn crop is rated 26% poor/very poor, 53% fair, and 21% good/excellent. The good/excellent percentage is unchanged from the prior week.

The Buenos Aires Grain Exchange estimates the early corn yield at 4,940 kg/ha (78.5 bu/ac) which is down 20% from last year at this point in the harvest. In the northern core region, the corn is 20% harvested and yields are averaging 5,670 kg/ha (90.1 bu/ac) which are down 23% from last year. Yields in the southern core region are a little higher at 6,100 kg/ha (97.0 bu/ac).

The Rosario Exchange late last week indicated that the 2021/22 corn production in Argentina would fall below 48.0 million tons and they indicated that further reductions are possible. The Exchange stated that corn yields will be the lowest in ten years due to the extreme drought and high temperatures in late December and early January. The Buenos Aires Grain Exchange left their corn estimate unchanged at 51.0 million tons.
