The early conditions for the first phase corn have generally been good, but the hotter and dryer forecast for December is worrisome because that is when the earlier planted corn will be pollinating and starting to fill grain. Additionally, we need to remember that 69% of the corn has not even been planted and that the planting could occur under adverse weather conditions.

Corn in Argentina was 31.1% planted as of late last week compared to 35% last year and 42.7% average according to the Buenos Aires Grain Exchange. This represented an advance of only 1.1% for the week. In the core production areas, the corn is 85-90% planted with 20-45% planted in southern Argentina and 0% planted in far northern Argentina.

The corn is rated 10% fair and 90% good/excellent. The good/excellent percentage is up 9 points compared to the prior week. The soil moisture for the corn is rated 7% short and 93% favorable/optimal. The favorable/optimal percentage is up 9 points compared to the prior week. Approximately 5% of the corn in Argentina is starting to pollinate with 15-30% pollinating in the core production areas.

The Buenos Aires Grain Exchange is now estimating the 2021/22 Argentina corn acreage at 7.3 million hectares, which is up 500,000 hectares compared to last year.
